In 2020, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) published a new Energy Sustainability Plan (ESP) to formulate actions and strategies that best adapt to future wholesale and retail energy market changes. Funded by the Geodesign Fellowship, this collaboration developed a central geospatial database (“Energy Sustainability Hub”) to support MWD’s ESP implementation. The Hub also integrates a web app that presents and tracks ESP progress, along with interactive “Water-Energy-Climate nexus” data dashboards for pumping, electricity consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions of MWD facility plants operation.
The project was presented in two live demo sessions to MWD’s Office of Sustainability and Facility Planning Team.
